A timeline of eating habits

shopping basket
BBC have today looked into our eating habits, past and present, and we're fascinated! Who knew that some of our 'old favourites' were really THAT old?! In the study, the BBC also looked at how the everyday items have evolved over the years. Almost 70 years ago a 'national shopping list' was created after analysing the most regularly purchased everyday items. Today, these everyday items, along with our eating habits, have evolved, and we've picked our top foods to show you how.... Cornflakes Breakfast cereals came into play in 1952 when they were deemed the first health food before the sugar-coated versions came on the scene. In 1987 oats were replaced by muesli and In 2001 cereal snacks appeared, changing to cereal bars in 2010, a reflection of our increasing tendency to eat breakfast 'on-the-go'. Tea 1947 saw the introduction of tea, if you could call it that back then. In 1980, the tea bag we're all familiar with arrived, with loose leaf being removed in 2002, reflecting a decline in sales. Herbal and fruit teas were added in 2001, but just for one year. By 2003, it was move over leaves, and only tea bags remained. Baked beans Our big breakfast favourite, baked beans appeared in the first basket alongside other tinned ingredients such as peas and canned tomatoes in 1976. By 2009 canned foods were less popular and the only cans on the list were tomatoes, sweetcorn and beans. Fish fingers All hail the launch of the fish fingers by Birdseye in 1955,  and first appeared in the 1962 basket, alongside other processed and canned fish such as kippers and sardines.
