Appearing Sunday 2nd September
Tom Kitchin opened restaurant, The Kitchin with his wife Michaela, on Edinburgh’s Leith waterfront in 2006. In January 2007, The Kitchin was awarded a coveted Michelin-star only six months after it opened, making Tom the youngest ever Scottish chef proprietor to achieve one at the age of 29.
Since then the restaurant and chef Tom have received nationwide recognition with a number of accolades and awards which have included Best UK Restaurant in the Square Meal Awards (2011) and Observer Food Monthly Restaurant of the Year (2010), Four AA Rosettes (2010), AA Wine Award Scotland (2010), No. 2 in UK top 100 Best Restaurants by Eat Out Magazine (2009), a Caterer & Hotelkeeper (Catey) award for ‘UK Newcomer of the Year’ (2008) and ‘Restaurant of the Year, Scotland’ at the AA Centenary Awards (2008).
The Kitchin’s philosophy ‘From Nature to Plate’, is a true reflection of Tom’s passion for the finest Scottish seasonal produce and the cooking at the restaurant reflects Tom’s French training under some of the world’s best chefs blended with his own Scottish heritage.
Tom has continued to be renowned for his creative cooking and pushing the boundaries of Michelin star dining. His innovative approach derives from his ‘From Nature to Plate’ philosophy – championing Scottish suppliers and serving the freshest seasonal produce.
Tom’s passion for food and cooking is reflected in his first book From Nature to Plate: Seasonal Recipes from The Kitchin, which was launched at The Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2009. A second book is set to be released later this year.
Tom has become well-known on television, having appeared on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, UKTV Food’s Market Kitchen and in BBC2’s successful series, The Great British Menu. Tom has since joined the Masterchef Final Chef’s table on a few occasions, with some of the UK’s most renowned chefs.
Passionate about food and sharing his knowledge Tom has supported a range of educational initiatives including Keep Scotland Beautiful’s education programme, Eco-Schools Scotland, which aims to educate and inspire school pupils on seasonal sustainable food and the importance of provenance when it comes to food.
